Is it dishonest to lie to keep a secret? Why or why not?

It is dishonest to lie to keep a secret because if a person were to lie to help a friend, it could have a bad effect on them at a future date.
Some secrets are meant to be a secret, but not all of them especially if it concerns others. In certain situations, lying just to keep a secret can cause a misunderstanding by both the party. It is still called dishonest because lying is still considered to be in the same category. If a person was to be considered honest, they should tell things that are right but still careful about how the other person is feeling. For example, a girl asks her friend whether or not she looks good in the dress she just bought. The best friend doesn't think it looks good on her and instead of saying it looks ugly on her, she would just say 'It doesn't suit you'.

Even though, the secret might hurt the other person, it is still right and as a true friend. If people were to be honest, they would begin to trust and have faith in one another. So as a true friend, we should be honest and trust each other in spite of a secret.
